In this picture, taken by me, a female Costa’s hummingbird is sitting on a tree. Costa’s hummingbirds winter in Nevada, with the males having bright purple feathers and the females having a mix of green and gray. The Costa’s hummingbird is a common species in the Southwestern United States and Mexico, frequently being seen drinking nectar from flowers. Hummingbirds require large amounts of energy in order to maintain bodily functions, and flower nectar serves as a high energy food source for them.
