Fluorescent lights flicker on and off as a man, no older than 30, cautiously approaches a small circular table located in the far right corner of an otherwise empty room. In its center, a single green pear accompanied by a scarlet apple sits beneath a folded paper sign that, in a bold, printed font, states, “Choose one.” The man reaches out his hand until it is inches from the two fruits, hesitating for what seems to be a millisecond, before proceeding to lift the pear. This seemingly insignificant choice, according to German psychologist Dr. Eva M. Krockow, represents just one out of the approximately 35,000 decisions the average adult makes each day. The reasons behind these decisions, however, continue to be debated as psychologists develop competing interpretations of why people think and behave the way they do. Among the most influential are the behaviorist perspective, which emphasizes learning through environmental influences, and the cognitive perspective, which focuses on internal mental processes. Thus, although these perspectives differ in their explanations of human behavior, together, they provide a more comprehensive understanding of how people think, learn, and behave.
The behaviorist perspective in psychology focuses primarily on the environment’s impact on behavior. In fact, it completely rejects introspection, the examination of one’s inner thoughts, feelings, and mental processes, and psychoanalysis, a set of psychological theories founded by Sigmund Freud that explores how unconscious desires and repressed memories influence behavior. Behaviorism was first conceptualized in the late 1890s when Ivan Pavlov, a Russian psychologist, started a series of experiments attempting to study the dog’s digestive system and accidentally discovered something else. Pavlov observed that the dogs salivated when they noticed the approaching research assistants or heard their footsteps, as after being handed food through the same methods, the dogs eventually paired the sound of footsteps with an incoming meal. Through their behavior, Pavlov uncovered classical conditioning, a learning process where a biological stimulus, in this case food, is associated with a previously neutral stimulus, a sound. This discovery fundamentally changed psychology because it demonstrated that behavior could be learned through environmental associations rather than instinct alone.
Following Pavlov’s discovery, American psychologist Edward Thorndike introduced the Law of Effect, which states that actions associated with a positive reward are more likely to be repeated, while those associated with a negative outcome are less likely to occur again. Thorndike reached this conclusion through his puzzle box experiments, in which cats were placed inside wooden boxes and learned to escape by pressing hidden levers to reach fish scraps outside the box. While Pavlov showed organisms form associations, Thorndike showed that consequences strengthen future behavior, laying the foundation for reinforcement learning.
Soon after, American psychologist John B. Watson published his manifesto, “Psychology as the Behaviorist Views It,” in 1913, popularizing the scientific study of behaviorism. One such experiment was Watson’s “Little Albert” experiment, where he conditioned an infant to fear a white rat, demonstrating that emotional responses could be learned through conditioning and suggesting fears are learned rather than innate. This experiment, though highly unethical, further strengthened behaviorists’ belief that the environment shapes behavior and Watson’s rejection of inherited explanations.
American psychologist B.F. Skinner expanded behaviorism through his work on operant conditioning. In the early 1930s, Skinner engineered the “Skinner Box,” an operant conditioning chamber that he leveraged to study animal behavior. Tracking rats and pigeons allowed him to build upon Pavlov’s discovery of classical conditioning and demonstrate that these animals’ actions were not automatic reflexes to a prior trigger; their behavior relied on environmental consequences. While classical conditioning explains involuntary responses, operant conditioning explains voluntary behavior, broadening behaviorism’s ability to explain everyday learning.
Today, behaviorism is used in therapy, education, parenting, business, and other areas. For instance, many therapists are known for using exposure therapy to soothe phobias. They implement techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which works by helping one identify and change their “panic actions” and “anxious thoughts.” To treat mental issues such as PTSD, therapists might use exposure therapy, which exposes someone to their fear in a safe space to “unlearn” their panic response. Behaviorism also helps autistic individuals develop particular communication or daily-life skills by introducing methods such as Applied Behavior Analysis, which uses incentives to motivate them.
Furthermore, schools introduce desirable stimuli to manage the classroom through methods like positive reinforcement, also utilizing programs such as Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports to reward students for following rules. Additionally, workplaces leverage incentives to motivate employees. Companies might use Organizational Behavior Management to boost productivity by offering bonuses, recognition, or awards in exchange for good performance. Parents may also incorporate behavioral principles without naming them when raising children. They may rely on an award chart or “time-outs” to reward or punish behaviors. These applications demonstrate that behaviorist principles remain relevant because they produce measurable changes in real-world settings.
Behaviorism transformed psychology by demonstrating that behavior could be studied objectively and modified through environmental conditioning. It has also provided modern society with effective methods for treating phobias, improving classroom behavior, supporting individuals with autism, and increasing workplace productivity. However, its rejection of internal thought processes leaves many questions unanswered, particularly regarding memory, language, and problem-solving. In a way, behaviorism treats the mind like a “black box,” as it allows psychologists to see the inputs that go in and outputs that result, but ignores what occurs inside. Scientists started to find that behaviorism was unable to fully explain complex human activities and were curious about the processes occurring in the “black box,” thus beginning to stumble upon a new perspective known as cognitive psychology, the scientific study of memory, perception, language acquisition, problem solving, and attention.
The catalyst for change came in linguist and philosopher Noam Chomsky’s review of Verbal Behavior, which critiqued B.F. Skinner’s theory of language and argues that human speech is far too complex to be explained by mere behavioral conditioning. The book argues that language is acquired because of mathematical rules existing in the human brain and that it cannot be learned through simple imitation. Chomsky challenged one of behaviorism’s biggest assumptions, shifting psychologists towards a new era of psychology, an era known as the “Cognitive Revolution.”
Psychologists George Miller and Jerome Bruner became leading figures in the cognitive revolution. In 1956, Miller published The Magic Number Seven, demonstrating that the human memory can remember only seven chunks of information, plus or minus two, at a time, bringing to light new information on the way people learn. At the same time, Bruner worked with co-authors Jacqueline Goodnow and George Austin to publish the book “A Study of Thinking,” which examines how people categorize objects and the strategies they use to organize the world around them.
Ulric Neisser further established cognitive psychology with his 1967 textbook Cognitive Psychology. Soon after, psychologists Richard Atkinson and Richard Shiffrin devised a model that represents the foundational cognitive framework of human memory. It proposes that human memory consists of three distinct memory stores: sensory, short-term, and long-term memory. Sensory memory briefly captures raw environmental data, short-term memory processes limited immediate information, and long-term memory stores knowledge for later retrieval. This gave psychologists a framework for studying memory, influencing education and neuroscience. Researchers could begin testing memory systematically.
Following the Cognitive Revolution, the field continued to evolve, strengthening its focus. However, like behavioral psychology, cognitive psychology has many weaknesses. First, it is reductionist, meaning it oversimplifies human behavior and reduces it to steps, such as input to process to output. This ignores the influence of external factors like the environment, genetics, and biology. Additionally, it ignores emotion, failing to explain how moods may affect the mind, and focuses on thought processes rather than feelings. Moreover, mental processes are invisible, meaning psychologists must guess what is occurring in one’s mind based on their behavior; because thoughts cannot be directly observed, cognitive psychologists often rely on indirect evidence. However, these inferences may not capture the full complexity of thought. Finally, it overlooks individual differences and assumes all human brains process information in the same manner.
Despite its incompleteness, however, cognitive psychology is still utilized today and has become one of the most influential perspectives in modern psychology. Its emphasis on internal mental processes has transformed fields such as education, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, medicine, and psychotherapy. In education, cognitive psychologists have developed evidence-based learning strategies, including retrieval practice, spaced repetition, and metacognition, which improve memory retention and academic performance by aligning instruction with how the brain naturally processes information. Within the field of mental health, cognitive psychology serves as the foundation of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), one of the most widely researched and effective treatments for disorders such as depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Beyond psychology, cognitive theories have also contributed significantly to neuroscience by helping researchers understand memory formation, attention, language processing, and decision-making through advanced brain imaging techniques. Furthermore, the perspective has influenced the development of artificial intelligence, where models of human cognition have inspired machine learning algorithms, natural language processing, and intelligent decision-making systems. Although cognitive psychology does not fully account for every factor influencing human behavior, its insights into how people perceive, process, and apply information continue to shape scientific research and countless aspects of everyday life.
Although both behaviorism and cognitive psychology seek to explain human behavior through scientific observation and experimentation, they differ fundamentally in the processes they emphasize. Behaviorism attributes behavior primarily to environmental influences, arguing that actions are learned through conditioning and reinforcement, whereas cognitive psychology maintains that behavior is largely shaped by internal mental processes, including memory, perception, reasoning, and decision-making. Consequently, behaviorists concentrate on observable actions that can be measured objectively, while cognitive psychologists attempt to understand the unseen processes occurring within the mind. Despite these differences, the two perspectives are not mutually exclusive. Modern psychology frequently integrates principles from both approaches, recognizing that behavior is often influenced by an interaction between external experiences and internal thought processes. This integration is especially evident in therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which combines behaviorism’s emphasis on modifying actions with cognitive psychology’s focus on restructuring patterns of thought. Together, these perspectives illustrate that human behavior cannot be fully understood through a single explanation alone, but rather through the combined influence of environmental experiences and cognitive processes.
Ultimately, the seemingly simple decision made by the man at the beginning of this essay illustrates the complexity of human behavior. A behaviorist may argue that his choice resulted from previous experiences and environmental conditioning, while a cognitive psychologist would suggest that memories, perceptions, and internal reasoning guided his decision. Neither explanation, however, fully captures the complexity of human thought in isolation. Throughout the development of psychology, both perspectives have transformed the way researchers understand learning, behavior, memory, and decision-making while contributing practical solutions that continue to influence education, therapy, medicine, business, and countless other aspects of modern society. Although each perspective possesses limitations, their combined contributions provide a more comprehensive understanding of why people think, learn, and behave the way they do, demonstrating that the study of human behavior is most effective when viewed through multiple psychological perspectives rather than a single theoretical lens. Therefore, no single perspective can truly bring light to the mysteries of the mind, for behavior is dependent on both internal and external factors.
