American Avocet

Last updated on November 22, 2022

Like the Canada goose, the American Avocet is another species of bird which can be found in and around Las Vegas. Commonly seen in shallow water, the avocet looks for insects and other small animals that have buried themselves in the mud. The bird in the picture is preening itself, which is a term referring to birds who take care of their feathers by cleaning and repositioning them. The brown-orange neck feathers shown in the picture are only present during breeding season, after which they get replaced by white and gray feathers.
