Emotional Quotient not Intelligence Quotient

IQ is talked about enough, but not EQ. The Emotional Quotient is understanding, using, and controlling your emotions successfully, which allows one to reduce stress, communicate with others clearly, and avoid confrontation. 

There are four skills of emotional quotient: self awareness, self management, social awareness, and relationship management. Self awareness is being conscious of your own feelings and thoughts about them. For example, the more power one has, the more likely they will be overconfident and know how well they know themselves. Self management is the ability to regulate your behaviors, thoughts, and emotions in a productive way. Even in hard times, self management is important because you can gain a positive outlook from these situations. Social awareness is the ability to recognize others’ emotions and to read the atmosphere of the room. Finally, relationship management is the ability to influence others and resolve conflict efficiently. With these four skill sets, you can build healthy emotional intelligence. 

Those with high EQ understand links between emotions and how they behave and remain calm and composed during stressful situations. They also influence toward a common goal and handle various problems effectively. On the other hand, those with low EQ feel misunderstood, get upset easily, and become overwhelmed by their emotions. Fortunately, there are solutions to improve your emotional quotient, which includes recognizing your emotions, asking for feedback, and reading literature. Specifically, regarding relationship management, building lasting relationships impacts one’s social development. By improving your EQ, it can improve your relationships, providing emotional maturity and communication skills. 

Understanding yourself more by analyzing and enhancing your emotional intelligence will bring you to a better quality of life and better control of your mental health. Though IQ can bring you the smarts, EQ is just as important. IQ and EQ exist together in balance.
