With the hot Vegas sun blasting down on the area, most kids tend to stay home or go on vacation for a majority of the summer break. However, a select group of students attend school earlier to form a unified group that performs at competitions in October. For these dedicated students, this period is known as “Band Camp.” Marching Bands are generally not advertised as often compared to the extent of athletics at most schools; however, there are a lot of work and achievements within these bands that deserve recognition.
What even makes up a marching band? Many people think a marching band consists only of marchers and the color guard, but there are many important roles. However, numerous roles hold significance within these programs. The band directors and staff serve as teachers. They help create shows for competitions and arrange pep tunes for football games. Parents also hold a significant role in the program in which they build props and provide nourishment at competitions. Additionally, there are several representatives from each section within a marching band known as section leaders. These section leaders help mentor marchers and serve as role models in the program. Lastly, there is a drum major, which is a student conductor who leads the whole band. To summarize, a marching band consists of multiple layers of organization; this includes props made from parents, dedicated hard work from students, and management from directors.
What is the experience of being part of a marching band? Students in a marching band learn a diverse set of skills. This includes being able to play musically on the field while performing a “show” for the audience. Each member attends rehearsals usually after school to learn and perfect their shows for competitions, which lasts for a period of 3 months. Most marching bands also support their school’s football team by performing stand tunes at games. Members also develop long-lasting friendships with one another, as it is a very social experience.
What is the best part about being in one? Being a drum major myself at Coronado High School this year, I would have to say it’s the marching band competitions. These competitions allow marching bands to showcase a show that they have been working on since the start of the school year. They also allow members to meet other students that share similar experiences. Arguably, these field trips are the best part because you get to spend time with your friends and travel to other places.
With finals approaching this upcoming Saturday at Arbor View High School, numerous schools around the Clark County School district will be competing. Who will win it this year? Will it be another upset by Green Valley High School, or the famous Foothill High School? Until then, make sure to support your friends that are in a marching band!
