The sun doesn’t take a day off—and neither do we.
Most people do not realize their risk for sun damage until it’s too late. In a state like Nevada–where UV levels rank among the highest in the United States–that ignorance can have dangerous consequences.
When I moved to the United States, I felt like I was starting over in every way. I didn’t speak the language, understand the culture, and never thought twice about the sun. Back in South Korea, sun exposure wasn’t something I worried about. But Nevada’s climate was harsh. Slowly, my skin started changing. I developed small, stubborn bumps on my arms and noticed an uncomfortable sensitivity I didn’t understand. It wasn’t just physical—it made me feel even more out of place in a new country.
I experienced the ignorance myself—how easy it is to overlook sun protection when no one talks about it, teaches it, or makes it feel important. For the first time, I realized how little I knew about caring for my own skin, and how little information was available—especially for someone like me, navigating a new life and new body at the same time. That moment of personal wake-up call evolved into a student-led movement dedicated to helping others protect their skin.
UVUV is a student-led organization, founded by Yerim (Pepper) Jung, to raise awareness about sun protection and make skin health more accessible, especially for communities that are often overlooked in dermatological care. Our mission is to educate, equip, and empower communities with the knowledge and tools to guard their skin against harmful UV rays. Through accessible education, meaningful outreach, and partnerships with like-minded organizations, we aim to spark a lifelong habit of sunscreen use and sun-conscious living.
Our mascot, Soli, is the face of our mission. Through Soli, we share educational graphics, including daily reminders to wear and reapply sunscreen. But UVUV is more than a cute character—it’s a growing movement.
We’ve partnered with the Nevada Cancer Coalition to provide educational outreach and free sunscreen kits to students of all ages. Our team will run monthly campaigns, lead school-wide initiatives, and collaborate with local organizations to make sun safety engaging and relevant.
If you’ve ever cared about health, service, or skincare, UVUV is the place for you. We’re not just spreading awareness—we’re building a sun-safe future.
