Life can be hard. Whether it’s school, work, family, friends, or any other facet of your every-day world, one thing we can all agree upon is that sometimes, simply put, things get tough. So it becomes difficult to actually believe people when they say “the grass is greener on the other side,” because unless “the other side” is your neighbor’s well-manicured lawn, many of us just can’t relate.
Instead, a quote I resonate with much more is “the grass is greener where you water it”. Sometimes we need to look past the every-day hustle and bustle and just take a moment to “water our grass.” From going on a walk, to listening to music, any slice of life that fosters your own mental health is worth it and will make your grass a lot greener in the end.
Society has put such a large emphasis on instant gratification that we forget to find joy in the worthwhile moments. Whether it’s pouring a cup of tea or making your bed, finding gratification in the small moments can make life that much less stressful. According to a research article published by Harvard, an act as simple as deep breathing is enough to quell the effects of anxiety and worry. This in turn exemplifies the power of small acts to secure our mental and emotional peace.
So instead of writing out another endless to-do list or pulling another all-nighter for the third time that week, take a second for yourself. To breathe, to eat, to sleep, to relax. Take a second to water your grass. Trust me, you’ll be thankful you did in the end.
