Community is the culmination of every little thing that ties us together with the people around us. In Las Vegas, we have an especially large community thanks to our population trumping that of other cities. While that may mean it can be difficult to contribute towards something incredible towards our community, I believe that developing aspects of our own character can guide us towards that path. Let me regale you with my own personal story.
My dad has always believed that a leader should serve. In my childhood, that meant doing an extra share of chores. Being the bigger person during disputes with my brothers. Taking the brunt of the punishment when we all messed up. As such, I never truly liked being a “leader” back then. All it meant to me was that I had to be treated less than my brothers despite how I was the best behaved while having the best grades. As I expected of my dad, he started talking a lot about community service when I graduated from high school.
My first major community service experience I fully take pride in was when I distributed food products as part of The Just One Project. In the organization, I distributed food packages to anybody who signed up as food insecure, which also included non-English speakers, senior citizens, and those with medical conditions. There, I learned how serious food poverty could be in neighborhoods and cities adjacent to mine and realized just how many underprivileged groups lacked definite support systems once they reached elderly age. Later on, my participation in both National Honor Society and Pre-Med Club led me to educate people about medical professions for the latter. The former having me aid myriad people in many places through cleaning up gardens, running concession stands, or keeping score of competitive sports like quizbowl. As I continued in these activities, my willingness to take on a leadership role increased, which contributed to me leading my school’s Pre-Med club of fifty members as President.
I ask for readers to think about two things: your talents and your interests. Realizing the things you have a talent for and combining them with what you aspire to be is a surefire way to contribute towards those that you care about. Whether it be in community service or a club inside or outside of school, anybody can do good towards others if they take the right steps.
