Dear Members of the Las Vegas High School Community,
Are you passionate about mental health, student advocacy, and building a community where people actually feel heard?
ZenGeneration is a nonprofit centered around addressing stress and depression among elementary, middle, and high school students through assemblies, videos, and small-scale technologies. We hope to create a space where students can confide in someone without immediately being lectured about how to fix themselves. Rather than telling students what they should feel, we want to provide understanding, compassion, and connections to people and resources who can help.
As people grow older, graduating from elementary school and entering the judgmental atmosphere of an older age group, new emotions can begin to arise—often negative, confusing, and unwanted. Stress, depression, anxiety, and feelings completely foreign to your younger self can suddenly begin to demand your attention. Because they are new, however, students often begin locking them away, letting them build up inside. They become ashamed of the difference these emotions make, embarrassed that they might be overreacting, or convinced that what they are feeling is too small to matter in the long run.
However, these emotions are still a natural part of being human. Hiding them away will not make them disappear.
That is why we are expanding our team, and we are looking for passionate student leaders to join our founding board.
As a ZenGeneration board member, you will help us:
- Plan mental health workshops
- Plan assemblies
- Connect with students
- Reach out to therapists/ psychologists
- Reach out to schools
- Attend fairs and events related to bettering mental health solutions in Nevada
- Create media to promote our impact
- Fundraise
Our Focus and Mission:
There are times when students question what the purpose of life is. Why do I keep pushing through society’s cruelty? Why do I have to work this hard? Why does everything feel so difficult? Those questions are valid. Because while it may be cliché, life is not fair.
I promise you, though, that it may seem incredibly low right now. It may seem like things are never going to change. It may seem like your friends are pushing you away, that you keep falling short of expectations that never seem to stop appearing, or that no matter how hard you work, it is never enough. Sometimes, you may simply want a break from all of it.
But there will be moments that make you temporarily forget the difficult ones. There will be people you have not met yet, experiences you have not had yet, and versions of yourself you have not discovered yet. You do not have to understand how things will get better for that possibility to exist.
So please, talk to someone. Talk to a friend. Talk to a trusted adult. Or talk to us.
This is our mission at ZenGeneration. We cannot solve your problems or erase what hurts you, but we can lend an ear. We may be strangers, but that can sometimes make it easier to finally say the things you have been afraid to say.
Future Goals and Member Application:
In the future, we hope to grow into an organization that reaches students not only throughout Nevada, but nationwide—through films, social media, workshops, meetings, and the voices of students themselves.
If you are interested in listening, understanding, and helping prepare students for the difficult moments that may lie ahead, please visit the document below. It contains the available positions for this year, along with their respective requirements:
