After months of negotiation, the conversations between the Clark County Education Association and Clark County School District have finally concluded. Since early 2023, debates regarding teacher pay have been circulating, and teachers and students have been fighting non-stop. For example, in September 2023, Clark High School had a student walkout concerning this matter. Around 2,000 students gathered in front of the school to show support and gratitude towards their teachers, directly mentioning the importance of paying teachers properly. Furthermore, many marches and rallies were held in downtown Las Vegas with pickets.
With the community’s efforts and numerous discussions, these two organizations have reached an agreement on a new contract with the help of an arbitrator. The contract addressed recruitment and retention issues by increasing compensation for educators and securing resources for teachers, especially special education teachers, and staff in high-vacancy schools. Some of the essential highlights from the agreement include Year 1 – 10% raise for educators, Year 2: 8% raise for educators, and an increase in extra duty pay from $31,50 to $50 per hour.
Without a contract for almost half of the 2023-2024 school year, it is fascinating and wonderful to see that CCEA and CCSD have ended on good terms. With this new contract, we shall see better treatment towards our teachers and overall satisfaction from the Las Vegas community. In future legislative sessions, CCEA and CCSD aim to seek solutions faster for more expedient dispute resolution.
