If you do, you’ve probably experienced some of the worst things that could happen while you’re drawing, such as art block and a lack of inspiration. It gets so annoying when you want to draw something, but have no inspiration and no idea what to sketch because you don’t know how to. But suddenly, you have an idea: artificial intelligence. It can replicate what you want to come to life and even look like you made it, but is this actually fair towards the other hard-working artists? For starters, people who use software like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Midjourney often don’t make their prompts from scratch. According to computer.org, most of the time when people type in a prompt for AI to replicate, it’s actually derived from an artist’s work to the point that it’s similar, but not quite the same, to avoid being accused of plagiarism. This can be challenging, especially for digital artists who even have to fight against others that their own work is actually theirs. Some apps like Pinterest, Facebook, and Instagram have labels on digital artwork such as “AI modified”, but there are times that the AI detector has been wrong. In those cases, the artists who have uploaded their artwork get labelled as an AI user. So what happens to the artists? Well, you may think that it’s not so bad since all the artist has to do is simply tell everyone that the AI detector is false, but in reality it’s much worse than that. According to findanexpert.unimelb.edu, most of the time the real artists face severe online harassment, damage to their reputation, and even develop the fear of showing their online work because they’re scared that it’ll be labelled as “‘AI slop” or be criticized.
Also, the use of AI takes away the “personal touch” or the actual process of making art. According to montrealethics.ai, concept art can be the pinnacle of creativity for some people since AI can easily make a perfect image, while a human cannot, which is what makes each human-made art piece special. It may be easy to be amazed by how beautiful an AI digital artwork looks, but deep down there isn’t actually any emotion in any of the artwork. But whenever you see artwork made from real people, their ideas, planning, sketching, and the process is something that everyone can see when they look at the perfect, imperfect piece of art. Unfortunately however, it’s the AI creations that put all of the work to waste when the artist gets called out for using artificial intelligence.
However, some may argue that this isn’t entirely the fault of AI, but rather the online community being too quick to jump towards accusations before knowing what is the true story. Although AI does bring a bit of distress in terms of digital art, it can also be quite helpful if you’re not the best at drawing in general. By creating different styles of digital art, it reminds the community that art is subjective and can be anything that you create. After all, it isn’t always the AI’s fault, but rather the person using it.
While AI is sometimes helpful in terms of creating artwork for non-artists, it has the ability to damage an actual artist’s reputation by creating a standard online saying that digital art pieces are likely made from AI. However, it’s very important to not jump to conclusions as soon as you see digital art because there is a possibility that there was a misunderstanding. All in all, people who want to publish art online should consider picking up a stylus before resorting to AI because it’s important to keep online artists safe in their own community.
