Were the 2026 Golden Globe Awards actually fair?

Who remembers when KPOP-Demon Hunters came out with their catchy songs, funny scenes, and colorful animation? Well, all of this actually helped them win the “Best Animated Film Award”, which stirred up some controversy among fans. In the list of nominees, a Japanese anime movie called Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle has received reviews about its stunning fighting scenes, a mix of 2D and 3D animation, and high attention to detail and even to physics. Yet somehow, it didn’t manage to win the award despite having very high quality animation. This heated debate between fans about who should’ve won eventually brought up the question, is the Golden Globe Awards actually fair towards international productions?

For starters, the Golden Globe Awards are owned by Penske Media Eldridge and produced by Dick Clark Productions. They have a yearly ceremony where awards are handed to movies that were voted the best based on 28 categories such as best actor, best motion picture, best animation, etc. According to goldderby.com, there were around 400 voters from different parts of the world that participated in this year’s ceremony. However with the KPOP Demon Hunters and Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle argument, fans noted that Demon Slayer had grossed more than 100 billion yen (around $633,890,300) and ranked seventh in worldwide box office films created in 2025 from asiae.co.kr and receiving a 98% on rottentomatoes.com, while KPOP – Demon Hunters only received a 92%.  So, when Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle only received a nomination along other productions like Zootopia 2 and Arco, many fans felt a sense of disappointment when they didn’t win the award.

Another factor that made the Golden Globe Awards feel predetermined to others is the fact that the Golden Globe Awards have had members on the team who were biased towards American productions. According to hollywoodreporter.com, 100 voters who were added by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association 2 years ago, have had a history of preferring Hollywood types over others. To point out, latimes.com states that Golden Globe Awards have indeed picked more famous and American directed films due to the high amount of money that Hollywood put in to advertise the films towards their targeted audience. Out of 15 film awards, 9 of them had gone to American productions. Most of them went to the same films like One Battle After Another, Hamnet, Sinners, Marty Supreme, and… KPOP Demon Hunters. On the other hand, international films had only secured 3 awards from the categories Best Non-English Language Motion Picture, Best Actor in a Drama, and Best Supporting Actor.

While some fans may feel like the Golden Globe Awards were biased towards movies such as KPOP Demon Hunters because they’re American and more famous, others may argue otherwise. Although at first, the Golden Globe Awards didn’t allow films with more than 50% of non-English dialogue to compete for bigger awards and were strictly only allowed to compete for Best Foreign Language Film, there has now been an actual chance for them to get a big award more fairly, as well as the creation of another category for international movies. According to directv.com, the Golden Globe Awards have a designated category for films that speak more than 51% of a foreign language called the Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language. Also as mentioned before, there are several voters who aren’t just from America who come together with all of their thoughts about the contestants before putting in a final say. Furthermore, the Golden Globe Awards also help to draw attention to smaller international movies, which actually helps their production to do better.

Even though the Golden Globe Awards have added categories such as Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language, there is still some bias towards the American films since a lot of money is used to advertise them to the public. However, the addition of more voters from different international locations appears to be making the Golden Globe Awards more fair towards foreign films. All in all, while international films are starting to win more awards, American films still hold a bit of an advantage against them.
