April is National Stress Awareness Month

April is National Stress Awareness Month and serves as a reminder to high school students across the Las Vegas Valley to be aware of their stress levels and to take steps to reduce stress during the school year, especially with AP exams and final exams coming up in May.

Significantly, there are a number of techniques that high school students can use to reduce stress.  First, two great ways to reduce stress are to (1) get active through exercise (any type of activity will do!) and (2) eat healthy, especially focusing on protein and fruits and vegetables.  Also, according to the Mayo Clinic (see https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/stress-management), it is important to focus on getting good sleep, both quantity and quality. Good sleep can have a significant positive impact on your concentration, mood and energy levels. You can focus on getting better sleep through a consistent and relaxing bedtime routine: think soothing music and meditation. In addition, consider keeping a gratitude journal and write in your journal at bedtime. Finally, consider taking a break from social media for a short time: it will always be there when you’re done with the break.

Also, during April, consider following the 501(c)(3) nonprofit campaign, Hope Means Nevada (HMN), on Instagram: @hopemeansnevada.  I am on the Teen Committee of HMN and know that HMN has a lot of great programming planned during April for Stress Awareness Month.  Last week, HMN went live on Instagram with a social media influencer named Social Anxiety Kyle whose goal is to help 1 million teens go from socially anxious to socially confident.  You can watch Kyle’s talk with Voice of Vegas Co-Chair Cooper Cunningham on Instagram at @hopemeansnevada. In addition, last week, current Las Vegas Raiderette Kristina Cullinane discussed School Life Balance, which you can also find on Instagram at @hopemeansnevada.
