Summer Reading

Whether it’s picking up a book during your summer travels, leisure hours, or the book that you’ve meticulously left adjourned. In a recent poll conducted by District Administration, over 60% of youth found enjoyment in partaking in summer reading from all sets of backgrounds, ethnicities, and their own individual preferences and philosophies. Each book has a story, argument, and its own personal experiences and philosophies written inside to tell. Yet what makes a book/story so compelling; that you’ll spend an indefinite amount of time reading between the lines and uncovering hidden meaning.

Arguably, one of the many reasons individuals find themselves invested into a book is its story. Be it non-fiction or fictions, individuals are captivated by the characters’ setting, story, and their personal endeavors. Likewise, it could also be their curiosity for the discovery of new knowledge or facts about certain fields and environments; these invoke a sense of consciousness and critical thinking/viewpoint that emphasizes the individual’s own personal experiences with the book. It also helps in empathizing with other individuals and allows the mind to think freely (or imaginatively).

Furthermore, books argue about their own individual beliefs and philosophies (mostly non-fiction), especially in times of oppression or whenever ideologies collide. One example of this can be seen in several banned books such as World of the Flies, To Kill a Mockingbird, Fahrenheit 451, etc. Each of these books influences an individual’s understanding/connection to modern day topics/problems as well as identifying others’ own prejudices and perspectives.

Lastly, reading helps with understanding others. Whether it be their own opinions, choice of words, or perspective. Understanding certain words can be beneficial in communicating your thoughts, emotions, or current activities/stories, as it improves your communication skills and aids in improving your verbal and writing skills.

In conclusion, there are a variety of reasons why books are beneficial to read during the summer time/break whether it be nonfiction or fiction. Each individual preference differs, each being unique. So maybe during your leisure time, pick up that book you’ve been holding off, to drift into your own imagination this summer.
