The State of Nevada

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo gave his first State of the State Address on Monday, January 23, 2023, where he discussed his vision for Nevada’s future and proposed a $11.4 billion budget for the next two years. Governor Lombardo’s proposals include changes to taxes, education and the criminal justice system and election reform.

In one of the more significant proposals, Governor Lombardo proposed a suspension of the state motor vehicle fuel tax for 12 months, saving individuals and businesses an estimated $250 million.

Governor Lombardo’s proposed budget also highlighted many changes to education, including $2 billion in new funding and additional scholarships to Nevada residents who attend Nevada colleges and commit to teach in Nevada for at least five years.

In addition, Governor Lombardo said that he plans to introduce legislation to reform the criminal justice system, including by establishing tougher penalties for repeat offenders and strengthening the drug laws.

Governor Lombardo’s proposal also includes starting a new Nevada Way Fund with $313 million of funding to be used for infrastructure and economic development projects.

Further, Governor Lombardo discussed election reform and proposed that all mail-in ballots should be received on Election Day, instead of allowing up to four days after Election Day. Also, while mail-in ballots could be requested by any voter, mail-in ballots would no longer automatically be sent to voters.Lombardo’s proposed budget now goes to the Nevada legislature. Nevada’s legislative session, which convenes once every two years, starts February 6, 2023, and ends on June 5, 2023.
