Series 1 – Focus: Minecraft

With today’s digital age, most teenagers are unable to focus on anything. With social networking sites, phones, and video streaming all vying for their attention constantly, it is simple for their brains to shift between one thing that stimulates them to another. This makes homework, studying for tests, or even planning that much more challenging for them. Stress and frustration are sure to follow.

One of these inadvertent solutions to this problem is the video game Minecraft. At first glance, it appears to be just another screen-based distraction, but Minecraft actually encourages sustained concentration and careful planning. The user must locate resources, craft equipment, and construct complex structures. These demand attention and patience, so the players must be alert if they are to get their job done.

Minecraft also teaches time management and patience. Since there are no deadlines or quick timers, the player can take his/her time and think through decisions. It’s not always about winning — it’s about creating something valuable, and that comes with effort and commitment. Creativity and problem-solving are placed together, keeping the mind active while instructing it to focus for extended hours.

In short, though there are so many issues that adolescents nowadays are facing in the aspect of concentration, Minecraft is one actual solution. It makes screen time become something which enables one to construct some of the fundamental skills like planning, patience, and attention to detail. Having fun playing a game that requires concentration can initiate adolescents in developing their concentrating skill also in their actual lives.
